POOR turnout by teams at this year’s May Day tournament that started last Monday at Jamhuri Stadium in Dodoma has shocked Dodoma Regional Commissioner (RC), Jordan Rugimbana.
The RC also refuted a notion that the
fifth phase government was discouraging workers from leaving their work
place and travel to Dodoma to take part in the annual tournament.
Rugimbana made the remarks yesterday at
the official opening of the event, insisting that he has never heard
President John Magufuli discouraging workers from taking part in sports.
In his speech read on his behalf by the
Dodoma Regional Youth Development Officer, Tumsifu Mwasambale, the RC
said he was perturbed to hear that some employers have failed to send
teams for the tournament because they think that doing so, would mean
unnecessary government’s expenditure.
“I’m shocked to hear that many
government institutions, which were regular participants in the
tournament, have failed to field teams this year and the reason which
has led to miss the games is the excuse given by the leaders that the
president has forbidden the games.
This is a wrong notion and I have never
heard about that order,” he said. The RC expressed his surprise that the
fifth phase government slogan of ‘Hapa Kazi Tu’ is being
misinterpreted.
“The call for hard work and deliverance
should not be an excuse for employers to discourage their employees from
taking part in sports activities,” he said. Rugimbana said active
sports at workplace helps to build good relations among employees and
employers improve health of employees and make them more active and
productive. “A health worker will certainly be productive and provide
best service to the citizens,” he said.
Earlier, in her speech, the Acting
Vice-Chairperson of the May Day Games Committee, Joyce Benjamin blamed
employers for the low turnout of participants in this year’s games
compared to previous years.
Benjamin said that until recently, only
14 teams had arrived in Dodoma to participate in the tournament, while
most institutions have been restricted by their employers without having
good grounds.
“I just want to remind you that our
president is a true sportsman,” she said, adding that May Day Games have
the blessing from National Sports Council (NSC). May Day games involve
various sports, including football, netball, tug-of-war, darts ,
athletics and cycling.
Organisations which have sent their
teams in this year’s competition are Tanzania Petroleum Development
Corporation (TPDC), The Ministry of Transport and Communication, Capital
Development Authority (CDA) and Tanzania Electric Supply Company
(TANESCO).
Others are CWT, TAMISEMI and Geita Gold Mine. Also there is RAS Manyara, Nyasa District Council and Mgombasi from Iringa
