S. African Court to Review Zuma Corruption Ruling

S. African Court to Review Zuma Corruption Ruling

FILE - South Africa's President Jacob Zuma is pictured during his visit to the Lodewyk P. Spies Old Age Home in Eersterust, Pretoria, Dec. 15, 2015. A judge in South Africa on Friday said a 2009 court decision to drop nearly 800 corruption charges against President Jacob Zuma was “irrational” and called for the case to be re-examined.

"The decision... to discontinue the charges against Mr. Zuma is irrational and should be reviewed," Pretoria High Court judge Aubrey Ledwaba said. "Mr. Zuma should face the charges as applied."

The court initially made the decision to drop the charges based on phone intercepts presented by Zuma’s defense team. They said the charges in late 2007 may have been part of a political plot against Zuma, and the court’s decision not to pursue the charges allowed Zuma to run for president.

The court decision Friday is likely to increase calls for Zuma’s resignation — some even from within his ruling African National Congress party — which started last month following a separate court ruling against the embattled leader.
